In the  Gokul, everyone was happy on the arrival of Krishna. Gopikas were astonished to see handsome and lovely Krishna.

“He is so beautiful. See his eyes, the darkest berries. I love it. Curly hair, dimple chin, dark blue skinned, so beautiful! Yashoda (Nanda’s wife) you are so lucky to have a beautiful son. Name him Krishna. Even your another son is also beautiful. Name him Balarama as he looks so strong.’’ In sanskrit Balarama means 'The stronger one'.

After some days, Nanda and Yashoda decided to name both of them. So, they decided to perform naama-karan (giving name) with the help of Rishi Naarad. In naama-karan as gopikas said, they named them as directed.
